The power of nature in the air – bipolar ionization
Fresh, clear air invigorates body and mind. Using bipolar ionization, we bring the natural principle of air purification from nature directly into our interiors.
Clean air – nature shows us how
Ions are available in abundance in the great outdoors – you feel energized and motivated. Tiredness or depression? Not a chance.
The proportion of ions is highest where we find water in motion (oceans, rivers, waterfalls). This is the reason why we feel so energized and refreshed by the sea.
In addition to moving water, nature knows another process to clean the air of pollutants:

More InformationThe thunderstorm triggers electrical discharges and this generates high concentrations of ions. Ions play an important role in reducing the amount of air pollutants – giving us a feeling of fresh and clean air.
The lowest ion count is found in windowless rooms and closed vehicles. Concentrations below 100 ions / cm3 can already lead to headaches, poor concentration and tiredness – signs of “sick building syndrome”.
Bipolar ionization
bioclimatic provides fresh air, just like nature does.
Bipolar ionization is a process in which ions with positive and negative charges are generated in the air (activated oxygen), just like in a thunderstorm.
This activated air generated by our devices acts as a natural cleaning agent in the room and restores and balances the natural ion ratios in the indoor air in closed environments.
This makes bipolar ionization an important building block in modern IAQ management.
Indoor air quality
Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality in and around buildings, particularly in relation to the health and comfort of users.
Values such as temperature, humidity and air flow are traditionally monitored. However, the pollutant content in the air also plays an important role.
These include
- Odors
- Bacteria & germs
- Allergens
- General volatile hydrocarbons (VOCs)
- Viruses
- Etc.
The sources are as varied as the pollutants themselves and are present everywhere in everyday life.
This makes it all the more important to take appropriate measures to ensure good indoor air quality.
Ion formation
Binding of pollutants
Air purification
Neutralization
Standards for HVAC and indoor air quality
The need for appropriate IAQ management is also reflected in current standards and guidelines:

Where bipolar ionization can work
Interesting facts about bipolar ionization
What is bipolar ionization?
Bipolar ionization is a process in which ions with positive and negative charges are generated in the air. This releases energy (e.g. lightning during a thunderstorm in nature or an electrically generated high-voltage discharge in technology). This excites the air molecules and splits them into positive and negative ions (loss or gain of electrons).
Energetic and motivating: this is how people feel at home or in the office. To ensure a high level of concentration and prevent fatigue, good air with a high ion content is particularly important. bioclimatic has taken nature as its model and made bipolar ionization a feature of its air purifiers.
What are the advantages of bipolar ionization?
bioclimatic uses bipolar ionization to improve indoor air quality. By generating positive and negative ions, pollutants and particles in the air, such as viruses, mold and allergens, can be effectively reduced. Unpleasant odors are also broken down and stale air in closed rooms is refreshed. The use of air purifiers from bioclimatic offers the best possible health protection and an optimal indoor climate.
The clear advantages of bipolar ionization are
- Reduction of unpleasant odours: Odours are neutralized by oxidation.
- Improved air quality: active oxygen is released, which prevents signs of sick building syndrome. Less than 100 ions per cubic centimeter cause discomfort and poor concentration.
- Extended areas of application: In the food industry, mold and bacteria are prevented, thus avoiding premature spoilage of goods.
Mode of action of bipolar ionization
All air purifiers from bioclimatic GmbH are developed and produced to guarantee clean and fresh air at your workplace or in your home. Breathe out and breathe in again with peace of mind! Bipolar ionization produces active oxygen that does not require or use any chemicals. You breathe pure air that leaves no room for pollutants.
The mode of action of bipolar ionization can be compared to a cleansing thunderstorm. The air molecules are ionized by lightning (natural high-voltage discharge). These ions are then able to purify the air and thus create the relieving feeling. If you step out onto the terrace after a summer storm, you will notice how fresh and pleasant the air is. There is no trace of the stuffy and oppressive feeling of heat!
Modeled on nature
A detailed look at the individual steps shows that there is no magic behind the process, but rather physics and natural processes:
- Oxygen is activated along the ionization tubes by an energetic charge. This results in the formation of excited ions that act as purifiers.
- Bacteria, pollutants and viruses are attracted by electrically charged ions.
- Binding of the pollutants begins and neutralization takes place.
- In addition, the bound particles and pollutants accumulate, making them heavier and thus easier to filter out of the air. This makes it much easier to break down bad odors or harmful particles.
The activated oxygen acts as a natural cleaning agent and ensures consistently optimal indoor air. The number of ions is increased to “fresh air” level, thus improving the indoor air quality.
Why are ions so healthy for the human organism?
The high quality of bioclimatic GmbH products is the result of continuous research and development. With every new device we try to reproduce nature even better and make it available to you. The basis and the excellent starting point for the bioclimatic ionization modules are based on the laws of nature.
A good ion content has a positive and health-promoting effect on the human organism. An imbalance leads to illnesses, deficiency symptoms and dizziness.
Why is ionization necessary?
Ionization is also of essential importance in nature. In order for the human body to function properly, sufficient ions – both positive and negative – must be present, as a lack of ions causes:
- Headache,
- Difficulty concentrating,
- Tiredness,
- and a reduced ability to react.
Studies have shown that air ionization in a balanced ratio of positive to negative ions improves oxygen uptake in humans and increases well-being and physical performance. An effect that cannot usually be achieved by ventilation alone.
Bipolar ionization: think long-term and live healthier
The importance of fresh air and breathing freely in human life was demonstrated during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. The wearing of filter masks and the increased demand for air purifiers brought the issue of clean air to the forefront of discussion. Up to this point, only allergy sufferers or people with hay fever had been affected by this issue, but from then on, air purification became one of the most important aspects of everyday life.
While conventional filter systems suck in the air through filters and the chance of remaining dirt particles is very high, bipolar ionization makes use of effective cleaning. The charged particles act in the room air and break down harmful viruses and bacteria.
The advent of COVID-19 has made bipolar ionization much more present and mainstream. But how does ionization work and is there evidence of its effectiveness? We will be happy to explain.
How was the bipolar ionization system tested?
The bipolar ionization system was tested in various ways to evaluate its increased effectiveness in air purification. Different types of tests were used to examine the extensive effects and impacts. bioclimatic also had these tests carried out or carried them out itself in order to achieve the best results for the devices and health-promoting indoor air. Some of the most important tests that were used are
- Laboratory studies: The tests simulated pollutants such as viruses, bacteria, pathogenic spores and allergens in laboratories. The effect of bipolar ionization on these pollutants was investigated within the controlled environment.
- Long-term studies: Long-term studies investigate the effects of bipolar ionization on air quality. The focus here is on human health, which was observed on the basis of several measurements over defined periods of time. Various scenarios produced detailed research results.
- Field studies: In field studies, researchers carried out tests in real environments. The focus was on offices, schools and hospitals. Comparing the air quality before and after the use of ionized air showed the changes and different measured values.
- Comparative studies: In detailed comparative studies, the results of bipolar ionization were compared with similar air purification systems. The detailed test values were used to evaluate and classify efficiency.
Each test clearly demonstrated that bipolar ionization is an effective means of producing healthy air. The research results vary depending on the size of the room, the number of people and the intended use of the room, but nevertheless clearly show that the use of air purifiers has resulted in a demonstrable improvement in air quality. Correct use and long-term commissioning can lead to a long-term improvement in the working and indoor climate.
